Does anyone have any idea of how I can teach Stanley to stay in the yard?
I don't mind if he goes over the back fence into the park, but I don't not want him to go to the neighbours and dig up their flower beds. Last fall, I put up chicken wire to stop the cat from going to the neighbours. That worked well but looked unsightly. I was hoping that he would learn to avoid that yard over the winter. Now that I have taking the ugly wire down, he's back over there. The board fence between us is only 3 feet tall, so I am considering putting lattice on top, but I think he may just climb over that too -------------------- We must never be afraid of going too far, for success lies just beyond.

Cats aren't like dogs in their boundaries. We can train a dog to use our boundaries but cat's are a different ball of wax. In their minds, their territory might be an acre or more, which includes the neighbors yards. I've never heard of anyone being successful in training a cat to stay in a yard or in being able to contain one, short of chain link.
Good luck, I hope someone else can make a liar out of me! -------------------- What is the point of assuming the worst, getting stressed, overwhelmed, and pessimistic, when the real thruth is that the end result is unknown?

What about a harness Lynda? Some have success with tethering them.

I just put Dora's harness on Stanley and he couldn't even walk straight. Just flopped on the floor -------------------- We must never be afraid of going too far, for success lies just beyond.

I just heard from a friend about a cat in her very posh condo building. The people don't like to have a litter box, but they also don't always like to go outside with the cat. So, at night time, they will put the cat's harness and leash on, put her in the elevator and send her downstairs. They call the concierge, who greets her when the elevator door opens, takes her out to do her business, then puts her back in the elevator and sends her back upstairs!!
