Brooks and Lynn

By Lynn Cullen

Well lets see, I started  the sport  reining with the outset of our reining club here in 1999. I was very eager to learn, but it seemed that my  back yard horses weren't really cut out for this reining thing. I was able to struggle along  (at times very painful with Justin my horse at that time)  but not having a lot of fun, and not really getting anywhere quickly.

I decided in 2001 that I needed a horse that was more cut out for the sport of reining, so, I purchased a little mare that I fell in love with from the moment I laid my eyes on her.

At first I tried to forget about her, especially since she cost much more than I ever dreamed I could spend on a  horse.  So, I went on holidays for two weeks, all the while kind of hoping that the people from California who were looking at her at that time, would buy her instead so I could stop thinking about her. On my way back from Montana however, I thought I would call her owners again, just in case she was still there.  They said they had been calling me wondering where I had gone, as the people from California didn't want her, and they really wanted me to have her. I decided to go and have a look again.

Brooks was quite a scrawny and awkward looking 2 year old, but I had a feeling I about her, a feeling that I couldn't ignore. I loved her and I needed her. Brooks was bred for reining,  she was the one alright, )my husband is going to kill me), but I said "I would think about it."

On the way to the ferry, it was silent, I wanted that filly so bad, but I new it was out of the question, way to much money. You could cut the silence with a knife. Then without warning my husband says, "You know those who don't take a chance, will never get a chance, If you really want her, and she's the one, Buy Her!" I almost dropped dead, I couldn't believe my ears, I wanted to scream, I called them from the ferry and said, "She's mine don't sell her! I will be back to get her soon!"

Well I have never looked back, my gut feelings were bang on.  We seem to be a great team together, I love every single ride I have on her.  I am always so amazed by athletic power, how she can keep going and going, like the "Energizer Bunny".

We have come a long way since 2001, averaging between 62-65 for scores, and coming in second twice at the WCRA high point show's in 2003. Over all I am very pleased with her performance, she try's really hard all the time, and if I her driver could pull it together more we might do even better next year.

Most of all we are having a lot of fun together, and I owe a huge thanks to my very special friend and coach Lynda Smith , whom with out , we would have never made it as far as we have.

Lynda thanks for pushing us  along and always believing in me, I look forward to another great year together in 2004!
